ETZ Ltd: building Scotland’s first Energy Incubator and Scale Up Hub

ETZ Ltd has secured over £3 million from Scottish Enterprise and bp to create an Energy Incubator and Scale Up Hub at its Innovation campus. Learn more about the hub and why it’ll be an essential part of the Energy Transition Zone.

Funding support from Scottish Enterprise and bp

ETZ Ltd has received £2 million support from Scottish Enterprise and £1.25 million from global energy firm bp to begin construction of the first Energy Incubator and Scale Up Hub (EISH) in Scotland, while the Scottish Government’s Energy Transition Fund will provide the remainder of the funds for the project.

EISH is set to be the focal point of the Innovation Campus, one of the five specialist campuses currently in development across the Energy Transition Zone. The innovation campus will focus on supporting the delivery of floating offshore wind and green hydrogen through the development and transition of capabilities and skills in the region.

Within that campus, EISH – made up of over 3000 square meters of flexible industrial and collaboration space – will foster manufacturing, supply chain company building, technology research and development and commercialisation, as well as targeted business support to drive entrepreneurship, innovation, and growth.

“Scottish Enterprise has supported the Energy Transition Zone since its inception and is delighted to provide its Energy Incubator and Scale Up Hub project with £2 million funding. The hub will provide a base for green energy start-ups as well as oil and gas companies and associated supply chains who are pivoting their expertise towards the net zero transition.”

Adrian Gillespie, Scottish Enterprise Chief Executive

Scotland’s largest energy transition complex

ETZ Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation spearheading Northeast Scotland’s energy transition ambition, accelerating the transition to net zero, supporting green economic recovery and delivering jobs for the region.

ETZ are behind The Energy Transition Zone: a world-leading hub for renewable energies set for completion in 2030. Adjacent to the Aberdeen South Harbour development, the zone will provide a location for the accelerated development of a net zero energy cluster to attract new investment and deliver net zero for the region.

“Innovation and a pioneering entrepreneurial spirit have been the hallmark of the North East of Scotland’s energy sector for over 50 years. The Energy Incubator and Scale Up Hub will help build on that proud reputation, allowing us to expand our vital energy supply chain, and be an integral part of the Innovation Campus and Energy Transition Zone.”

Sir Ian Wood, ETZ

A close collaboration of industry and government

Sir Ian Wood, Chairman of ETZ Ltd, has expressed his gratitude for this latest funding, saying “we are hugely grateful to bp and Scottish Enterprise for supporting this major project which is further evidence of the importance of collaborating closely with industry and government if we are to achieve an accelerated and successful energy transition, one that creates sustainable jobs and company growth as we create a cutting-edge innovation ecosystem.”

Doris Reiter, Senior Vice President North Sea, bp, said: “We're at an exciting moment again in this region's energy story, not least through bp's own plans to scale up offshore wind, hydrogen production and electric vehicle charging, while continuing to focus on safe, reliable, and low emission production of oil and gas from the North Sea. We're proud to be supporting the ETZ's EISH to help ensure this region's pioneering spirit lives on for many more decades."
